Archbold Man Killed After Van is Struck by Train

BRYAN — A 31-year-old Archbold, Ohio, man was killed early Monday when the minivan he was driving was struck by a freight train at Williams County Road 18 near this community, authorities said.

William Figy, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred about 4:05 a.m. at the Norfolk and Southern railroad crossing on Road 18 near Fulton County Road E-50 in Pulaski Township, about 3 miles northeast of Bryan.

Mr. Figy was southbound on Road 18 when the 2001 Honda minivan was struck broadside by a westbound train on the north set of tracks of a double-track railroad stretch, troopers at the patrol’s Defiance post said.

An engineer and a conductor, who were operating the train, were not hurt.

The crossing is equipped with lights and crossing gates, troopers said.
