Algae-Plagued Ohio Lake Gets Traditional Cleanup ST. MARYS, Ohio (AP) - As the state works to
control toxic algae plaguing Ohio's
largest inland lake, volunteers are giving it a more traditional cleanup.
The Lima News reports boaters combed Grand Lake St. Marys for debris Saturday
while other volunteers cleaned up trash from the state park grounds. The
boaters found trees, propane tanks, tires and even a portable bathroom.
It's the first time boaters helped with the annual cleanup at the lake between Dayton and Toledo.
Park manager Brian Miller tells the newspaper that officials knew heavy spring
rainfall and flooding would have led to more debris in the lake. Now he's
hoping to have boats as part of the cleanup each year.
In all, the collected debris included 100 bags of trash and 30 dump-truck loads
of fallen trees and wood.
